Oregon Coast Trip - Oregon Coast Aquarium

Posted by Steve on April 26th, 2008

During our trip to the Oregon Coast last month, we made a couple visits to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. (In fact, we actually became aquarium members for the first time.) During our first visit, which happened to be on Easter morning, we got a rare treat:

That’s the Giant Pacific Octopus (whose name might actually be [...]

Oregon Coast Trip - Sandstone Formations

Posted by Steve on April 15th, 2008

The photo above, which was taken from the deck of the house we rented just north of Yachats, shows a large area of beach containing sandstone formations. From the deck, they don’t really look that interesting, but a closer inspection reveals a number of fascinating formations, as shown in the photos at right.
Yachats sandstone [...]

Oregon Coast Trip - Yaquina Head Lighthouse

Posted by Steve on April 10th, 2008

As I mentioned previously, the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is one of our favorite places to visit along the Oregon Coast. Located at the north end of Newport, Oregon, Yaquina Head is home to one of the more picturesque lighthouses along the coast, as this set of photos hopefully reveals.
Built in the 1870s, the [...]

Oregon Coast Trip - Coastal Scenery

Posted by Steve on April 7th, 2008

As promised, here is the first group of photos from our Oregon Coast trip. The shots in this set were but a few of the ones I took during our recent trip. (Click on the thumbnails to view larger versions of the images in the spiffy new lightbox viewer I just finished integrating into our [...]

Oregon Coast Trip

Posted by Steve on March 30th, 2008

We spent Easter weekend and most of last week frolicking on the Oregon Coast. Jen found us a great vacation rental (shown above), and we visited several of our favorite haunts along the coast.

As you can see, the weather wasn’t all bad. In fact, about half of the days were downright spectacular (especially for [...]

Respect the van

Posted by Steve on January 20th, 2008

With a tad of reluctance, we became owners of a 2008 Honda Odyssey minivan last week:

What can I say? It’s a very nice vehicle, and with two car seat-bound children, a dog, and all the requisite “equipment” (um, not the first word that came to mind as I was typing this) that comes along for [...]

Can you explain this photo?

Posted by Steve on June 24th, 2007

Can you explain this photo? Most complete answer wins. Hint: it was taken on June 16th. But where? And how?

At vacation’s end

Posted by Steve on June 9th, 2007

As you can see, Evan’s becoming a good little traveler. I like this shot because it kind of captures the sadness that accompanies the end of a fun vacation. Evan, at least, said he wanted to stay in “Hiii-eeee” (how he pronounced “Hawaii”) when it was time to leave.

You’ll need to register to look at [...]

Trip to Hawaii’s Big Island

Posted by Steve on June 9th, 2007

On May 16th we left on our first big “family vacation” to Hawaii’s Big Island. Our destination was the Hilton Waikoloa Village mega-resort. Now, Jen and I wouldn’t necessarily have chosen the Hilton in our pre-kid days, but vacationing with an almost-2-year old requires a very different approach to vacation planning. So, the supposedly family-friendly, [...]

Catching up… On the drive home

Posted by Steve on May 3rd, 2007

On the way home from Newport, we stopped at what has long been one of my very favorite places along the Oregon Coast: The Devil’s Churn. For me, the ocean truly comes to life here. If you’ve never been, stop by next time you go by. It’s just south of Yachats. Take the refreshing hike [...]
