Today is Gauss’s 9th birthday! As I wrote back in January, Gauss is in great shape for a dog his age. No signs of arthritis, his teeth and gums are healthy, and he still has lots of energy (when he wants to). For his birthday, Jen and Evan made some homemade peanut butter dog cookies this afternoon, and they also wrapped several gifts for him, including some toys, a braided rawhide ring, and a bag of Greenies Senior. Gauss loves finding and opening P-R-E-S-E-N-T-S! We have to spell it out like that because as soon as he hears the word — no matter what time of year — he starts searching behind chairs and rummaging around the room looking for the hidden you-know-whats. When he finds one, he eagerly, though with astonishing precision, literally unwraps the… you-know-what. Once revealed, he immediately resumes the hunt for the next hidden treasure. When he realizes that all the, um, “items” have been found, the disappointment is noticeable as he finally resorts to methodically revisiting each of the previously opened gifts now strewn around the room. We’re looking forward to many more years of these treasure hunts with Gauss.
