Mt. Rainier, dawn to daylight

I took this series of photographs of Mt. Rainier while we were visiting my parents in Olympia, WA, in mid-February. This unobstructed view of Mt. Rainier is enjoyed from their deck as well as from several rooms in their house. Three of the photos were taken during sunrise, and the other one was obviously taken in the middle of the day. In addition to the dynamically changing colors in the sky, I love how the fog weaves between the trees and how it gradually “lifts” out of the valley as the sun rises.

Mt. Rainier from UPS campusFor both me and Jen — and for most people who have lived in the state of Washington, I imagine — Mt. Rainier has long held special meaning. For both of us, as kids, the family visits to Paradise Lodge, the nearby visitor center, or Cougar Rock campground were always exciting. And as students at the University of Puget Sound, the majestic peak — a mere 30-40 miles away as the crow flies — seemed to almost preside over the campus. And now, on our occasional visits up north, we enjoy views of Mt. Rainier like the ones above.

You can download a collage of these four photos here.

A beautiful series of photos, especially in the mosaic layout.
