Can your BlackBerry do this?

Posted by Steve on January 31st, 2008

iphonesemi.jpgJen and I each got iPhones when they came out last summer, and we both love them. (Yes, we got our $100 rebates.) Since then, I’ve dropped mine once from hip height onto a carpeted floor; I wasn’t even worried. As for Jen, I’m not sure what sort of torture she has put her iPhone through. (FYI — she has a really bad track record with PDAs as she has shattered the glass on both an Apple Newton and a Palm Visor!) But even with a 2 1/2 year old at home, I doubt Jen’s iPhone has been through anything like what happened to this guy’s:

Sure, it has some scratches, and there’s a couple dead spots on the screen, but it basically still works! When asked how it survived, the owner said:

I don’t have an answer to that question. It makes and receives calls, sends and receives text messages, browses the internet, plays music from the iPod feature, connects to my wi-fi network, syncs with my computer, and charges the battery. The camera even takes perfect pictures still!

He claims that Apple PR is interested in his iPhone and story. And as for whether a BlackBerry could withstand the same punishment, he says:

I’m here to tell you — if you’re hard on your phones, if you’re a power user, if you depend on its strength, reliability, and durability —- you need an iphone! I’ve always been a Blackberry owner, but the first time I dropped it on a sidewalk, the screen was toast — just came on blank white — completely useless.

I recently got a BlackBerry Pearl at work. I’m pretty sure that it would end up as nothing more than mangled plastic and wires if it got ran over by a truck. But maybe that wouldn’t be such a bad thing!
