A Katydid

The three of us were down at Riverplay Park early this morning, as we often do on Sundays after going out to breakfast, and upon our arrival I spied this friendly little critter. For some reason, I had decided to bring along my nicer camera (which I haven’t been using much lately) and was able to get some decent macro shots of what I now believe is some kind of katydid. After spending about 30 minutes on the web trying to identify it more precisely, I gave up. (Who knew it was so complicated?!?!) My best guess is that it is in the Tettigoniinae subfamily and is probably what is more commonly known as a shield-backed katydid. Anyway, I’m pretty sure it’s a katydid, not a grasshopper, and definitely not a cricket. Also, I know there’s little to no scale in the photos, so I’ll just tell you the bug was about an inch long. Despite the insect’s beautiful green color — several photos of which can be found by clicking through to our gallery — I found the black and white version of the one photo to be very intriguing.
