Amethyst astilbe

Posted by Steve on June 19th, 2006

Here’s another photo from our yard — this time in the back: Amethyst astilbe (or False Spirea) with Hydrangeas blooming in the background.

Both plants were planted just over a year ago and have, thus far, survived — not always an easy feat in a yard regularly patrolled by a 70 lb. lab-mix. Yes, Gauss tends to single out certain plants for, um, “extra attention.” Unless we intervene, he will “water” them to death. For instance, these plants spent all last summer and winter in a roped-off bed and were allowed to establish themselves in their new home. Upon reopening of the bed, Gauss nearly fried one of the Hydrangeas. I suppose he is just trying to help, but for some reason he is unwilling to relinquish this responsibility to the very nice sprinkler system we have in our yard!
