Food photos

Posted by Steve on May 19th, 2006

I started a new album in our photo gallery devoted to food (see link below). For some reason, I like taking pictures of food. I think there are a few reasons for this. First, food doesn’t move (well, not usually, anyway) — which also explains why I like taking pictures of anemones! Second, I’ve been enjoying the blog Cuisine Quotidienne which is written by my former high school French teacher. Betty features all kinds of great food photos on her site, and it has sort of inspired me to start my own little collection. Finally, even though it is (usually) stationary, there remains a more subtle challenge to photographing food. A food photograph stands in stark contrast to how we primarily experience food (i.e., eating it). That is, when all you can do is look at something you normally taste, smell, and touch, there’s a real challenge in conveying something beyond what it looks like. I’m not saying I accomplish that in any of my food photos, but it is — at least sometimes — something I think about.

Ok, enough philosophizing! A few weeks ago we made the muffuletta shown at right. A muffuletta is an Italian “sub” sandwich that is traditionally prepared in a hollowed-out round of bread the night before, wrapped up, and then refrigerated. All those succulent flavors blend, the bread softens a bit, and… mmm-mm. The next day you’ve got the perfect meal for a picnic, visitors, or just a casual dinner alone.

Hi Steve! Just found this reference through Technorati! There’s so much going on in the blogosphere…anyway, have fun taking pictures of food! It is an interesting subject. I was never interested in photography at all until I got a digital camera. Bon appétit!

We have gone from climbing peaks in the Cascades and diving among the sharks to “Which Jane Austen character are you?” and “Stalking the wild muffeletta (or however you spell it!)”

Welcome to middle age my (formerly) young friend.

Seriously, though, I especially like the panna cotta photos. The square wedding cake is a good picture, but the background doesn’t float my boat.
