Thanksgiving report

Posted by Steve on November 26th, 2005

2005-11-24I think Jen would agree that this was probably the best Thanksgiving dinner that we’ve prepared to date. We planned the meal so we could enjoy it together after Evan had gone to sleep for the night, and everything — including Evan not waking up! — turned out almost perfectly. We got an 8 lb. “young” turkey (yes, they really do come that small if you ask for it) and prepared it simply: we stuffed it with apples (primarily to add moisture), rubbed it with butter, and seasoned it with pepper. As we’ve done in the past, we used an oven bag which, again, keeps the turkey moist and shortens the required cooking time. For side dishes, Jen made “Mom’s” potatoes which are sort of a twice-cooked mashed potato casserole consisting of mashed potatoes (duh!), sour cream, cream cheese, butter — need I say more? Jen found a new recipe for green beans, which I prepared. It was green beans with sauteed wild mushrooms (porcini, oyster, crimini, and chanterelle). It was delicious, and we plan to repeat it next year. There was also store-bought stuffing with gravy (which turned out just fine) and a cranberry/orange relish (which was only so-so). And Jen made homemade parker house rolls. For dessert, as previously mentioned, Jen made a delectable homemade apple pie!
