Most of you know that for many years I have maintained a website dedicated to Oregon’s exploding whale incident, which happened on November 12, 1970. I started the site while I was in grad school at the UofO. In late 1999, the site was moved to our personal domain, hackstadt.com, where it has resided since. Well, the exploding whale is on the move again!

In conjunction with the 35th anniversary of the event and a profile piece^* about the website appearing in today’s Register-Guard newspaper by columnist Bob Welch, I’m very excited to announce the official launch of…

The new site exhibits the exploding whale like you’ve never seen it before. In addition to all the old content — like the video and the Dave Barry article — I’ve researched and reproduced all the old newspaper articles from 1970, and I’ve documented 7 other exploding whales (and 1 almost-exploding whale). The new site adopts a blog format, and I’ll be updating it regularly with related stories and interesting news items.
