National driver’s test
Posted by Steve on May 27th, 2005I’ve always held that the only drivers worse than Washingtonians were Oregonians. (Note: I spent the first 23 years of my life in Washington, and I’ve lived the last 12+ in Oregon.) So imagine my surprise when I saw the results from a 20-question driving test administered to over 5,000 drivers nationwide. It turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong! Here’s a sampling of the rankings:
1. Oregon — 89.4
2. Washington — 88.4
…
43. California — 80.4
44. New York — 79.8
47. New Jersey — 78.3
This has got to be a case of “book smarts” vs. “street smarts”, doesn’t it? There’s an accompanying article to the survey results, too.

Steve,
I couldn’t agree with you more about Oregonian and Washingtonian drivers. They stink!! I can’t fathom how they managed to get to the top of the list. I have to say, though, that the bottom of the list does seem believable. Colorado drivers are usually ok, but there are definitely some real idiots in Boulder. My theory, of course, is that most of the idiot drivers in Boulder are actually former New Yorkers or Californians. In any case, Boston has got to be the all time worst. By the way, I just returned from Italy. The Italians seem to view stop signs and the center line of the road as “suggestions” which they frequently, if not almost always, ignore.
